Lee Murray ONZM BSc Tech, MSc (Tech) Hons, MMS Dist. (Waikato)

Lee Murray ONZM is an author, editor, poet, essayist, and screenwriter from Aotearoa New Zealand. With more than 40 titles to her credit, Lee is the winner of multiple Sir Julius Vogel (13), Australian Shadows (5), and Bram Stoker Awards (5), and is her country’s only recipient of the Shirley Jackson Award for psychological horror. Titles by Lee include military thriller series, the Taine McKenna Adventures, supernatural crime-noir trilogy The Path of Ra (with Dan Rabarts), WWI novella Despatches, and short fiction collection, Grotesque: Monster Stories. She is the editor of twenty-one anthologies, among them Black Cranes: Tales of Unquiet Women with Geneve Flynn (RDSP), Unquiet Spirits: Essays by Asian Women in Horror, with Angela Yuriko Smith, and women in horror poetry collection Under Her Eye with Lindy Ryan (BSB). Other works include non-fiction title Mark My Words: Read the Submission Guidelines and Other Self-editing Tips (with Angela Yuriko Smith), and several books for children. Lee’s short stories and poems have appeared in prestigious venues such as Weird Tales, Space &Time, and Grimdark Magazine, and her story “Māoriland Blue” was 2023 Doylean Honorée for Fiction. She is a Rhysling- and Pushcart-nominated poet, and an Elgin Award runner up. Her prose-poetry manuscript Fox Spirit on a Distant Cloud won her the Grimshaw Sargeson Fellowship, the NZSA Laura Solomon Cuba Press Prize, and an Australian Shadows Award. A manuscript assessor, international literary judge (including only the second New Zealander to judge the World Fantasy Awards), conference panellist and guest of honour (Conflux and GenreCon), Lee is a former HWA Mentor of the Year and NZSA Honorary Literary Fellow. A third-generation Chinese New Zealander and the first writer of Asian descent to receive the New Zealand Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Fiction, Lee lives in a little house on a hill in the sunny Bay of Plenty.
